A friend of mine named Jas wrote this fiction story a couple of years ago. I don’t know what really gotten into her, but maybe she was inspired by some of my little ‘adventures’.. This story may or may not have happened, but funny how stories you secretly keep a long time ago is now so easy to share. :)

She arrived late for another potentially uneventful evening shift. She missed working with her friends around. Too bad that given her new schedule, she had to work alone with no friends to bug her tonight.
As she hurriedly enter the building lobby, she tried to look for her ID. The elevator door opened and she walked in still huffing air after brisk walking under the moonlight.
She slid her ID on the machine attached to the side of the office door. It beeped as the door opened to welcome her in. She proceeded to her work desk and hapahazardly turned on her computer. She found herself staring at the monitor when she realized a person’s head was poking from the side of her cubicle.
“Hey! Are you okay?”
She was still staring at the man asking the question. He was clad in his usual shirt and maong pants. His hair near his forehead was messily swept to the side. She could feel the intense black onyx meeting her brown ones.
“I was asking if you were okay?”, he said. She was suddenly snapped from her reverie.
“What?! Oh! You gave me a fright”. She silently prayed he didn’t notice her stuttering.
He let out a soft laugh. “You look like you have just seen a ghost. Anyway, I just wanna ask you something.” he said while displaying a genial smile.
Why is he here? Does he know about me liking him? Questions came pouring on her mind and she wished she knew the answers.
“W-what is it?”, Mel said still red in the face by Enrico’s sudden turn up.
“What’s you favorite music genre again?”, his local accent apparent but he seemed oblivious of it.
Her mouth was practically hanging open. This guy, who rarely even starts a conversation with anyone, is here right in front of me asking something that is utterly…random?
She needed a few seconds to absorb the question. What was it again? Uh yeah. Music.
“Well…”, she started while collecting her thoughts. “I pretty much listen to any songs. Why?”
He slowly walked beside her desk and began staring at her monitor. He started to digress from the original topic. “Is that what you’re doing? That looks complicated. You must be really good.”
He glanced at her but suddenly took his attention back to her monitor. She tried to feign her interest with whatever it is he was looking at, unfortunately the sudden swing of his mood basically caught her off guard. Her defenses are getting wobbly by now and the butterflies circling inside her stomach are not helping her at all. She tried to focus on her work, mustering all the strength to look like his mere presence does not affect her at all. But she could feel the warm feeling from his neck to her face.Damn with the adrenaline and why do my veins have to involuntarily constrict and allow more blood to flow through them?
“Thanks for sharing what you’re doing. It was interesting”, he said while looking at her intently.
She, on the other hand, almost jumped. It made her face even redder. “Please quit doing that. You’re giving me a heart attack.”
She wanted to take back what she just said but she knew it was too late as a smirk appeared on his face. “I gave you a heart attack, you say?”, he scoffed and shook his head as he raised his left brow to signify satisfaction.
“See you around, Mel.”
============
“See you around, Mel.” Then he sauntered back to his work desk with a smug look written all over his face leaving Mel utterly flabbergasted.
Wha-wait…Did he just talk to me like I’m dumb? And why is he smirking? That son of a mother.
She tried not to pound too hard on her desk as her fist was going numb from hammering the hard surface.
“Okay. Breathe in. Breathe out. I admit.”, she started talking to herself now to suppress the rage boiling from her insides.
“I admit that I like you more than I can even tell anyone. The thing is, I do not know why I even like you. You are everything I never like in a man. I can barely keep up with your mood and you have a patience as thin as the onion skin. You are hardly ever pleasant. You’re a great snob. And you are not even goodlooking, I might peg you for a Dino head if I didn’t know you that well.” I abhor everything about you. But…,” she trailed of.
“But how come you’re the only one who can lighten up my day? Which is weird.”, she heaved a sigh. She looked at herself in the mirror.
“I don’t know why I like you. I just do. I like you but I do not know what to do about it. But I hope someday I can say it upfront. I don’t give a rat’s ass if you like me or not. If it rubs your ego that someone like me actually likes you for who you are, then so be it. Bask in the fact that a simple smile can make my heart all giddy. Carry it like a trophy. “
“Because probably, that’s the only thing I can give you.”
